A Trip to Coorg

Coorg is a beautiful hill destination in the southern part of Karnataka. It is known for its cool weather, green landscapes, waterfalls, and peaceful atmosphere. Coorg is easy to reach from Kannur Airport and Calicut Airport, making it a good choice for family travellers.

Coorg sightseeing places

Today, many travellers visiting Kerala also plan short hill trips nearby. Well-planned Kerala tour packages often include destinations like Coorg for travellers who enjoy nature and calm surroundings.

A Little Flashback – Travel Memories

Coorg is close to Mysore. I did my engineering in Mandya, near Mysore. During those days, Coorg was one of the places we visited with friends.

Winter hill station travel

Those trips were very different from today. We travelled on bikes, sometimes late at night. There were no mobile phones, no ATMs, and very little cash. We faced punctures, headlight problems, and roadside repairs in remote areas. Even now, when friends meet, these stories come back with laughter and nostalgia.

This trip was special because it was a family trip. We planned everything properly and booked our stays in advance. Visiting Coorg after marriage was something we had planned for many years.

How to Reach Coorg

Here is a simple idea of travel distance:

  • From Cochin: around 400 km (about 11 hours)
  • From Calicut: around 200 km (about 6 hours)
  • From Kannur: around 130 km (about 4 hours)

If you arrive in Cochin, it is better to stop at Calicut for one night and then continue to Coorg. Calicut and Kannur both have beautiful beaches and good sightseeing spots. Many travellers enjoy Kerala beaches in December before heading to hill destinations.

Our Halt at Calicut

We started our journey from Aluva at 2:25 pm and crossed Thrissur around 3:40 pm. On the way, we stopped for tea and bhajis at a small roadside tea shop. It was a refreshing break for both kids and adults.

We reached Calicut around 8 pm, checked into our hotel, and went to Calicut Beach. The beach was lively with families enjoying the evening. We walked along the shore, visited small shops, and had dinner nearby. Later, we stopped at Adams Chayakkada for tea before returning to the hotel.

Morning Walk by the Sea

The next morning started with our usual black tea. We went to the beach again for a morning walk. The cool breeze and calm surroundings made it a refreshing experience. After spending some time there, we returned to the hotel and prepared for our journey to Coorg.

Journey to Coorg

We travelled to Coorg through the Muthanga forest route. The drive was peaceful, with greenery on both sides. We reached Coorg by evening and checked into our hotel. Our stay was planned for two nights.

The next day, we hired a local taxi for sightseeing. We wanted to relax and enjoy the places without driving ourselves.

Places We Visited in Coorg

During our stay, we visited some of the main attractions:

  • Golden Temple
  • Abbey Waterfalls
  • Talacauvery
  • Raja’s Seat
  • Madikeri Fort

The Golden Temple was very peaceful. The calm feeling there is difficult to describe in words. Abbey Waterfalls was lively with flowing water and greenery. Raja’s Seat offered a beautiful view, especially in the evening.

Trips like this are perfect for travellers who enjoy cool weather, just like winter hill station holidays in December.

Heading Back with Beautiful Memories

After two comfortable nights in Coorg, we started our return journey to Cochin. This trip gave us quality family time, peaceful moments, and memories that will stay with us for years.

A trip to Coorg is not just about sightseeing. It is about slowing down, enjoying nature, and creating memories together.
