Exploring Thenmala – Kerala’s First Eco-Tourism Destination

Located around 60 km from Kollam, Thenmala is known as India’s first eco-tourism destination. Nestled in the foothills of the Western Ghats, it attracts families, nature lovers, and adventure enthusiasts alike. Managed by the Thenmala Eco-Tourism Promotion Society (TEPS), the place offers a variety of nature-based experiences and adventure activities, perfect for a relaxing Thenmala trip in Kerala.

A Morning Trek to Rosemala – Hidden Beauty of Thenmala

Jeep safari to Rosemala forest trail

The next morning, we planned a Jeep safari to Rosemala, about 25 km from Thenmala. It’s a hidden gem inside the forest, perfect for nature lovers who love offbeat travel. The road was rough but surrounded by thick greenery, adding excitement to our journey.

We stopped for photos near a small water stream, where the forest reflected shades of green under the soft sunlight. On the way, we crossed the Chenkurinji tree, native to the Western Ghats and known for its strong, termite-resistant wood. It’s also used in traditional medicine, proving how deeply nature supports life in Kerala.

As we climbed higher, we reached Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, a 171 sq km protected area rich in biodiversity. The sanctuary is home to elephants, deer, monkeys, and a variety of birds. The trek through the sanctuary to Rosemala Peak gave us stunning views of the rolling hills and mist-covered valleys — truly one of the best trekking experiences in Kerala.

Rosemala is also great for birdwatching, especially for spotting the Malabar Grey Hornbill and White-bellied Treepie. The view from Parappar View Point was unforgettable — layers of green mountains meeting the clouds, with the Parappar River winding through them.

Sustainable Tourism and Local Culture

The eco-tourism project in Thenmala was started as a joint effort between Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) and Thenmala Eco-Tourism Promotion Society (TEPS). Their goal is to promote sustainable travel while supporting local communities. Most staff at the eco-resorts and activity centers are from nearby villages, creating a responsible tourism ecosystem.
